The gift of the Holy Spirit has two different effects. On one hand, the gift is received by the faithful who have trusted in the Lord’s promise and who have awaited the fulfillment of that promise. On the other, the Spirit empowers us as believers who are sent to share God’s promise to a world still in darkness of sin and death. This work of the Spirit causes a profound change in the nature of the church. What we have been given is meant not to be hoarded but to be shared, not to be kept but to be given away, as we proclaim the story of the salvation God has accomplished by the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.
